STENCH
www.myspace.com/swedenstench
Stench is everywhere. I don't mean they're popular; it's just that - from the evidence of the first few tunes - they don't know how to write a song that doesn't go off on unnecessary detours all over the metal spectrum. The opener contains some incredibly bad riffs, that the guitars almost sound out of tune with each other. In fact, most songs have riffs somewhere that sound like punked-up nursery rhymes. The singer is a fairly typical borderline black metaller. He does his job reasonably well, but against the backdrop of wannabe technical death metal, it all sounds a bit weak and out of place. I've tried to find something in these songs that peaks my interest, but as soon as a riff or a beat arrives it immediately gets shoved out of the way for some god-awful half-baked idea. However, that's not to say that everything is bad. 'The Fire', which effectively commences the second half of the album, is a decent tune. Following that is 'Crimson Hills' and, good lord; it doesn't make me want to cut my ears off either. And so it goes for the entire second half of this CD. If only the band that made this half could have told the band that made the first half to sod off (or, hell, made it an EP), the score could have been so much higher. Stench could, if they stop trying too hard (and ditch the wandering riffs), be a reasonable act. I'll even go as far to say that I want to hear their follow-up. But, here and now with this album, Stench are a frustrating prospect. And not an entirely pleasant one.
