STRANGE LAND
www.strange-land.net
Opening with what is, and I shit you not, as close as you can get to ripping off 'Stairway to Heaven' without actually getting the lawyers involved, Strange Land don't set out their stall proper until track 2 'The Men Who Spent Tomorrow'. Grungy alt-rock; the sort you used to nod politely to back in the late-nineties. The whole album feels like it has been found in a time capsule. What is perhaps more unfortunate is that even then it would have struggled to have its voice heard in the myriad of faux-progressive grungers. I say faux-progressive only because there are allusions to technical wankery. But, it's far from progressive; regressive perhaps. And so, the album just kind of drifts by making its noise and waving its arms in an attempt to draw your attention away from something, anything, more interesting. 'One Drop of Water' sums up the listening experience for me in its first line "A waste of time...". I am sure there are people out there to whom this will speak to, and if down-tuned progressive grunge sounds like your particular nectar please knock yourself out. I'm going to pass if you don't mind.
