SUBMISSION
www.submission-ragecage.dk
Formed in 2003 by guitarists Christoffer Petersen and Kasper Kirkegaard, Danish metallers Submission inked a deal with Listenable Records in 2005 which resulted in the release of their debut album, 'Failure To Perfection', a year later. Unspecified disagreements led to the band leaving said label and, shortly after, vocalist Steven Qvist quit. Recruiting Lasse Sivertsen to frontman duties, Submission then signed to Blistering Records, and here we have sophomore full length release, 'Code of Conspiracy'. Commencing with a short instrumental riff-led piece, it is an effective 'in' to the album, and a welcome break from the plethora of bands who choose to open their albums with generic orchestral intros that bear no artistic relevance to the rest of their music. It is a device oft deployed by Swedish stalwarts Darkane. '111008666700' segues into 'Rebel of Society' and, after a few bars, I can't help but think...Darkane. And when Sivertsen's vocals kick in, I actually have to remind myself that I'm not listening to Darkane! Okay, I admit to being a longtime fan of Malmström and co, but Submission's brand of progressively technical thrash with a scattering of death metal elements is verging on stylistic plagiarism. Perhaps a bit harsh - the politer word to use would be pastiche but, semantics aside, the music on 'Code of Conspiracy' is overwhelmingly Darkane in both composition and execution. Fortunately, a redeeming fact of this is that Submission do it so well, as the album has a monstrously heavy production, is chock-full of technically proficient riffing/leads, and unrelenting in pace (apart from mid-album mellow number 'An Illusion of the Perfect Forever'). For those who have yet to discover Darkane, then 'Code of Conspiracy might just be hailed as taking thrash metal to the next level, which is most welcome in an age where retro-mimicry seems to be the latest trend in the thrash scene (Bonded by Blood; Evile; Gama Bomb et al). However, Darkane have been doing this for years so as solid an album as 'Code of Conspiracy' is, there is nothing new on offer here.
