THE KANDIDATE

What if Entombed aped the formula for metalcore? The formula contains, in various degrees and combinations of course, rapid guitars; chugging guitars; breakdown; shoooooooouting. It would sound like 'Until We Are Outnumbered', I could leave the review at that and you'll know whether you want to hear this or not. It all sounds a mess with a production quality that can only have been overseen by the tea boy. Guitars get lost in a wall of fuzz; there's stuff going on beneath it, but it's practically inaudible. The drums, when doing something more subtle than the pap-pap-pap that dominates the majority of the album, are buried. The singer is venomous enough, but could be replaced by any number of cookie-cutter wannabes. He does at least try his hand at melody on occasion. There's nothing new here, or particularly worthy of your thirty-odd minutes of lost time. However, if groove and breakdowns are all you live for, by all means knock yourself out. Ironic album title though, because they are outnumbered by far better exponents of this genre.
