THE THINKING MEN
www.thethinkingmen.com
The Thinking Men are a five piece from Norwich where, by all accounts, they are very popular and renowned for their live shows. ‘Queen of the Ravens’ is a 4 track EP, and is the bands third release, following on from ‘7 Jars of Colour’ and ‘Ululate’, which are also EPs.

This release kicks off with the title track and it is an entertaining listen, with a lyrically sinister tone carried along on a galloping beat. The next two songs, ‘Under My Skin’ and ‘Graveyard Shift’, follow on in similar vein before we arrive at the fourth and last cut, ‘Oil Song’. Although the pace and drive is similar to the previous tracks, the subject matter of this one is different in that it tackles the invasion of Iraq in vituperative, but erudite, terms.

When I write reviews, I normally try and think of whom the band can be compared to or who they sound like, so as to provide points of reference for the reader. It is a mark of The Thinking Men’s freshness, innovation and originality that I can’t really think of any other band that they sound like. I really enjoyed listening to this release, enough for me to want to investigate the band’s back catalogue and to check out one of their acclaimed live shows.
