THIS WICKED TONGUE
www.thiswickedtongue.com
Female fronted quartet This Wicked Tongue, from Worcester, are new rockers on the block having only formed in 2010, and 'Carry This' is the band's latest three track EP, clocking in at just under twelve minutes. But they utilise those twelve minutes to the max with a trio of songs that showcase their dynamically engaging, eclectic rock aesthetic. And I'm left wanting to hear more which is a sure sign they're doing something right here. Eschewing any obvious genre classification, bursts of classic rock riffs are mixed in with grungier guitars, heavied-up-verging-on-metal passages, melodically infectious hooks, some nice clean guitar-led moments, rhythmically interesting drums, some inventive bass playing and occasionally innovative, progressive flourishes in each of the compositions. Opening track 'Carry This' demonstrates all of the latter in less than four minutes so This Wicked Tongue, so soon in their career, have proved themselves solid, succinct songwriters. Throwing a lot of sonic diversity into a song and making it work simultaneously as an accessible slab of alt-rock is no easy feat but, here, This Wicked Tongue succeed. And the icing on the cake lies with Christina Maynard's vocals which alternate between a restrained approach and more ballsy rocked-up attack, and always tonally interesting with the melodies she sings. Guitarist Haydn Rogers also contributes some singing and has a great voice too - the smooth tones of his mellow delivery on EP opener 'Carry This' work particularly well. All in all, based on the three tracks that constitute this EP, This Wicked Tongue are one to watch out for in the coming months. Very impressive indeed.
