TRIDENT
www.myspace.com/tridentofficial
This Swedish band certainly has some credentials to their name before they even strike a note! You see, Trident features Johan Norman from Dissection and Tobias Sidegard from Necrophobic. This is their debut under the moniker Trident and the opening track ‘The Trident’ is a cinematic ambience becoming climactic metal and bodes well for the upcoming album. Ripping straight into ‘Jaws of Satan’ there are strains of Dissection creeping in there already with some inventive and constantly progressing guitar playing (along with some full on guitar solos). So far so good and as the album progresses we’re treated to more of the same. The main problem this band has though is that they are playing the tried and tested formula of thrash influenced blackened death metal which, lets face it, is an extremely oversaturated market. This isn’t to take anything away from Trident as their songs and playing are very good but I wonder how far their appeal might go when there are some equally good releases of this caliber to listen to at the moment. There is a certain catchiness to some of the refrains in the songs and Trident are not afraid to slow the pace down on the album with a track like ‘Black Velvet Wings’. Ultimately, a solid debut from veterans of the scene but as to how good it all is depends on how many repeat spins it gets over the year.
