TURBONEGRO
www.turbonegro.com
Perennial purveyors of filthy, raw, unpretentious Deathpunk, Turbonegro are back once again, five years after their last studio album, with their ninth offering in the form of 'Sexual Harassment'. In fact, one could argue they're the sole purveyors of Deathpunk. Fellow Norwegians and underground sonic scavengers Lydia Laska have perhaps come close on occasion with their own self-proclaimed style of 'Black 'n' Roll Pop' but Turbonegro undeniably remain Deathpunk hegemonists. And 'Sexual Harassment' is a remarkably infectious hunk of sonorously hard-hitting party music that steamrolls its way through just over half an hour of acerbically demented rock 'n' roll. With their usual blend of punk, rock, metal, new wave et al, the band's compositional style is perhaps a little more rounded and succinct in its fusion than ever before but Turbonegro's underlying aesthetic and attitude is still intact. New vocalist Tony Sylvester, ex-Dukes of Nothing frontman (hence his latest assumed moniker, Duke of Nothing), does a fine job here; his vocal delivery sounding like a less fucked up Lemmy. Imagine what the Motörhead frontman might sound like with half the JD/tobacco consumption over the years...kind of a semi-Lemmy if you will! It works a treat for Turbonegro's music and helps inject a renewed energy into their overall vibe. And recorded at New York's Electric Lady Studios, the album sounds amazing, with just enough polish so as not to detract or abate that raw rock 'n' roll edge you'd expect from this demented bunch of Norwegians. A perfect balance between the raw and the resonant, songs have an unrestrained, but controlled, energy and I guarantee that once you've been ensnared by its suavely raw dynamism, you'll be hitting play again and again to relive the half an hour of 'Sexual Harassment'.
