UNEARTH
www.unearth.tv
Ten years in and Unearth are still proudly brandishing their metalcore allegiance. The Maiden-esque harmony guitars of opener ‘Watch it Burn’ soon give way to the tropes of the genre, huge riffs, roared vocals, and before the first minute is up, the first of many chugging breakdowns is upon us. And the cycle continues. In fact, it continues for the rest of the album. And then it hits you. You’ve heard this album before. A lot. That’s the problem with metalcore, its trappings are difficult to escape and Unearth have fallen for them again. Proficient as they are, this album offers little new and the metalcore template has been relied upon way too heavily. Growled vocals are followed by clean vocals, songs build up to the breakdown, and instrumental prowess takes precedence over songs. In fact, it’s difficult to distinguish this from their previous efforts, and given that they’ve been at it for ten years, you’d think that they’d push their own boundaries instead of sitting snugly within them. With Killswitch Engage’s Adam Dutkiewicz providing top notch production and KE’s Justin Foley filling in on drums, the KE-influence is more than apparent. Yet their presence is more a novelty than productive. It’s definitely got its moments and it’s a solid record that fans of the band and/or genre will no doubt embrace, but it’s got little to offer to anyone else.
