VOMITORY

‘Opus Mortis VIII’ is the eighth album from Swedish 4-piece Vomitory, and from the very offset it’s made very clear that this band are just as heavy as ever. Erik Rundqvist’s vocals on ‘Regorge In The Morge’ are absolutely destroyer, backed up well by the solid drumming of Tobias Gustafsson. The pace picks up with ‘Bloodstained’, a real headbanger. The swinging rhythm of ‘They Will Burn’ wouldn’t sound out of place on a Testament record. More excellent guitar work from Peter Östlund and Urban Gustafsson secures ‘The Dead Awaken’ as a brilliant track to bang your head to, whilst ‘Hate In A Time Of War’ has so much power that it practically blasts it way out of this record as a stand out track. Both ‘Torturous Ingenious’ and ‘Forever Damned’ are fast paced thrillers, with some outstanding solos and style. ‘Shrouded In Darkness’ has a real atmosphere about it and the way in which it builds would be great to hear in a live setting, and ‘Combat Psychosis’ is a full frontal attack - fast and thrashing. The final track on the album is ‘Requiem For The Fallen’ and this has some fantastic layers of intensity within, the guitars sound excellent and the bass just rumbles alongside the guttural vocals of Rundqvist. This band have continually chopped and changed their line up over the years, but it seems they have found a formula that works as ‘Opus Mortis VIII’ is definitely a very strong release.
