Some albums just have that magic right from the start and Weapon evokes atmosphere immediately with ‘From the Devil’s Tomb’. Reminding me of the opening of a Secrets of the Moon or Rotting Christ album the intent is clear: dark brutality mixed with esoteric occult themes and exotic character. Weapon could easily have slipped into a timewarp of creativity, as within the first few minutes I find their brand of Black/ Death Metal timeless, finding references as far flung as Possessed, Morbid Angel and even Destruction. There is a raw barbarity that feels intense and slightly unhinged whilst retaining a powerful control of the riffs and songs and a simple clarity to its venomous bite. ‘From the Devil’s Tomb’ has grown on me the more I’ve listened to it, from being an immediate and interesting album to becoming an essential full-on blackened metal assault. Don’t be fooled that you’re not going to find melody on this album, because you will. Especially in some of the lead guitar work, sometimes even invoking old Fields of the Nephilim moods. A good example of this is the instrumental ‘LEFTHANDPATHYOGA’. There is the sparse use of keyboards on the album, never intruding on but always adding to the powerful dynamics of what is simply a very good metal album and one that I heartily recommend to those who want an organic extreme album exuding (dark) personality and some damn fine songs played with vigour and skill. The album, taken as a whole, is a well thought out work that, whilst brutal, evokes a dark esoteric atmosphere.
