WE THE FACELESS
www.myspace.com/wethefaceless
Two tracks. Two very opposing musical statements. One a seething mass of hardcore brutality. One a stripped-down, almost Beck-like (Sea Change-era), acoustic blues poem. So, which is the 'real' band? Who the hell knows but, as both tracks are quite superb, who the hell cares anyway? Opener, the eponymous 'Isle of Dogs' rests on a staccato rhythm section; throbbing bass high in the mix. The vocals are borderline punk, as hardcore vocals should be, spewing mantras forth. Later a neat, and heavily wah-wah effected, lead break eases the tension. Only then to be replaced by some near-death metal vocalising. Sweet. Closer 'Hollow' really is a polar opposite. Whilst not particularly twee, musically it would not be out of place as the 'token acoustic track' on any number of rock albums. Here though, lyrically, it is a tale of losing everything except the feelings for another (at least I think so); the pained vocals cracking at the end. And that's it. Two tracks. Two excellent musical pieces. One happy reviewer. One high score.
