WHAT THE NIGHT BRINGS
www.facebook.com/whatthenightbrings
This is the sophomore EP from Buckinghamshire metallers What The Night Brings and what a hard-hitting slab of metal it is too. Subtle Pantera-esque grooves are intertwined with mathcore innovation in what's a relentless sonic ride spanning four skilfully composed tracks that achieve what must undoubtedly be their aim - to bombard the listener with full-on aural intensity. There perhaps lies a slight weakness of 'Bound by Apathy' too as it's all so relentlessly intense that a greater injection of variation in the up-tempo heaviness would've made the heavy parts sound even heavier - as it is though, I found myself becoming immune to the heaviness as the EP progressed. Variation does rear its head during the clean guitar passage on lengthy closer 'Front Towards Enemy' but it's too little too late for me. Production-wise, the EP sounds fantastic, and all instruments/vocals have benefitted from a well balanced mix too. If only they could refine their songwriting to incorporate more light and shade, just as they do on the final track, then What The Night Brings will be able to rise above the pack and garner the attention of a wider audience. Nonetheless, based on evidence here, they're still a bright hope for the future of the innovative side of the UK's ever evolving extreme metal scene.
