WITCHCRAFT
www.witchcrafthome.com
Well, it’s been five years since Witchcraft’s last full length, ‘The Alchemist’, and after a label change and three new members, their bell-bottomed psychedelic doom rock hasn’t changed much. There are the Black Sabbath riffs and bluesy lead breaks are still there, draped all over the leaden doom tempos, while Magnus Pelander’s sweet melodic vocals weave their way through the heavy air. Trouble is, after five years, it should deliver much more of a kick than it actually does. It’s like Pentagram/Sabbath-lite with tracks that should shake the shit out of the building but are about as shaky as Ozzy on a rope ladder. There are plenty of catchy choruses that’ll no doubt have audiences singing along but other than those choruses, there’s little else that lingers. They run the full gamut when it comes to the dynamics, tempos, feels, and structures across the album but it’s just way too light to leave an indelible mark. When the grooves kick in – and they can be fantastic – they follow it up far too soon with an anticlimactic melodic passage that almost kills the moment, the track and, with it, the whole album. The production is classy and the musicianship is top notch, but this should do more. It’s in there somewhere but it’s just not rearing its ugly head as high as it should and neither is it roaring as loudly as it should. Listening to ‘Legend’ – a misnomer if ever there were one – is just so damned frustrating because it’s so spectacularly innocuous and infuriatingly unmoving.
