WITNESS THE FALL

Witness the Fall have been around since 2007 and claim that they’re “tired of bands who made music that simply towed the line”. Promising words indeed considering they’re compared to some of the stalwarts of contemporary metal, namely Arch Enemy, Trivium and Killswitch Engage. At six-tracks long it’s a fairly hefty piece of work for an EP when many bands would normally settle for three or four and some albums barely scrape the ten-track mark. Sadly, there’s not much variety from track-to-track and it would have been nice if they’d tried to branch out into something slightly more progressive rather than sticking to roughly the same tone and dynamic on every track. They were never going to be a band who stuck to the idea of the “token ballad” but something a bit different would have been nice.

The whole EP is based around the admittedly catchy guitar riffs and growling vocals and seeing as the band have said that they wanted to create something “extreme” it’s easy to see why they chose to do this but it does make you wonder where this is going and doesn’t really capture the imagination. While there’s no doubt that the band know how to write and perform a metal album (or EP in this case), it does tend to fall a bit short of being wholly unique. The influences from their contemporaries can be heard throughout but much of it seems to stick to the tried and tested formula which, while this isn’t necessarily a bad thing and it’s music that appeals to a wider audience that seems to stand the test of time, it does seem to go against the band’s original premise somewhat.
