WOE OF TYRANTS

Ohio band Woe Of Tyrants spent much of 2009 criss-crossing America on various tours promoting their brand of high octane Death Metal. Instead of resting they started work straight away on ‘Threnody’, their second album for Metal Blade Records and third in total. I’ve heard them before and although I wonder whether they are playing in an incredibly oversaturated market I know they have a growing reputation. But an immediate listen to the first two tracks is actually very disappointing. Fortunately, third track ‘Venom Eye’ really lifts the album and has such a strong opening sound right into some quality ripping riffs you wonder why it wasn’t put as the opening track for the album. Fortunately, from this point, the album does get much better and everything seems to turn up a notch. There is speed, melody and a greater sense of songwriting with some memorable moments, even on a first listen. The title track ‘Threnody’ twists and turns as it progresses and, in a strange way, reminds me of Bal-Sagoth with some of their twisted riffing through songs from their later albums. Although the market is over-saturated this is certainly one of the better releases this year.
