HEART
One from the archives here. 'Live in Atlantic City', a special Heart show, originally aired on VH1 Decades Rock Live in 2006. Thirteen years later, it's apparently being released for the very first time, on LP, CD, DVD and BD. So, what makes this one a special show? I guess Heart aficionados would claim each and every one of their shows to be a special occasion, but this one, in particular, saw the participation of some musical luminaries from the rock scene and beyond. Dave Navarro, Duff McKagan, Gretchen Wilson, Rufus Wainwright, Alice in Chains and Carrie Underwood each join Ann and Nancy Wilson on multiple tracks, with a climactic participation of all special guests on 'Barracuda'.
Tracks were drawn from Heart's back catalogue for the gig, and it's chock-full of fan favourites, plus a small number of covers in the form of I-Ten's 'Alone'; Alice in Chains' 'Rooster'; and Led Zep's 'Rock and Roll' and 'Misty Mountain Hop'. A little online digging seems to suggest the actual setlist for the show was a little more expansive, with Underwood performing her own track, 'That's Where It Is', along with two further Led Zepelin covers - 'Black Dog' and 'The Battle of Evermore'. I guess we can only speculate as to the exclusion of these pieces. Licensing issues? Subpar versions? Too much Led Zep?! Who knows. What is here, though, is good enough, with well over an hour of Heart bliss, along with a couple of covers and Alice in Chains rocking it out on one of their own.
Musically, the performances are all first class... as expected, I guess, with the level of talent being showcased. And, judging by the fantastic audio quality on this, it's had some sort of remastering work done... or maybe it just sounded great in the first instance. Either way, 'Live in Atlantic City' is sure to excite all the Heart enthusiasts out there. And I'm not sure if the release date has been delayed, as my promo copy clearly states "November 30, 2018", whereas it says "January 25th" on the accompanying press sheet. So, what would've made a perfect Christmas present for the cherished Heart fan in your life will now have to be a bonus new year gift!
