HIGH TREASON
www.high-treason.net
High Treason are veterans of the NWOBHM scene, having been formed in the late ‘70s. In a similar vein to Satan’s Empire, whose latest release is reviewed elsewhere on the these pages, they are enjoying something of a renaissance. Understandably, the line-up has changed from that of the original and now consists of founder member and guitarist Malcolm Scott, fellow guitarist Paul Bailey, vocalist Peter Yeomans, and the rhythm section of bassist Martin Raggett and Hudson Deans on drums.

This release follows on from their long-playing debut, ‘Radio Will Find Me’, released back in 2007, and contains a number of strong tracks with the quality of the songwriting evident. The songs that stand out after a few listens include ‘Ride Into The Storm’, which is full to the brim with melody coupled with a driving rhythm; ‘Day I Return’, featuring a nice acoustic intro and a momentous riff reminiscent of Whitesnake’s ‘Judgement Day’; ‘Crosshairs’, which has a Thin Lizzy vibe to it, possibly because of the twin guitars; and ‘Surviving Your Love’, which features some excellent guitar work.

The production of this release has been well handled, with each cut having the right mix of melody and a hard edge, and the tight rhythm section keeps everything moving along at the right tempo, whilst Yeoman’s bluesy vocals are given room to impress.

All in all, this is a decent effort when you bear in mind the amount of time that has elapsed since the band’s last studio release and the ensuing line-up changes. If you’re a fan of classic rock with a considered approach that’s not afraid to use plenty of melody, then ‘Silver Bullets’ might just appeal to you.
