SLASH (FEAT. MYLES KENNEDY & THE CONSPIRATORS)
www.slashonline.com
The companion piece to the simultaneously released BD/DVD, this is the double CD, audio-only experience, of 'Live at the Roxy 25.9.14' - Slash + Myles Kennedy & Co's intimate 500 capacity club show from less than a year ago. I can't help but wonder whether the Roxy show was originally geared up just for the release of its audio/video counterpart, as the cover for this album has been lazily designed - merely the image from the BD/DVD cover slapped onto a plain background. They could have, at the very least, redesigned/reformatted the existing cover to fill the entire frame. It just looks a little odd... and lazy. Either way, the CD format features a bigger setlist, albeit still not a complete one ('World on Fire' track 'Automatic Overdrive' is absent).

With both the DVD and CD submitted for scrutiny, I'm in danger of repeating myself by reviewing both (DVD review link provided below), so I'll keep it shorter here. Suffice to say, it will depend on your own preference as to whether you'd want to purchase either/both of these. However, considering the double album only has two additional tracks to those featured on the DVD, my recommendation would be to grab the latter, as the show has been filmed so incredibly well that you'd only be getting half the story with just the audio. That said, I know some prefer the audio-only experience of a live performance - and the sound on the CDs fulfils that desire nicely. A little crowd noise has been mixed in here and there, although the actual music sounds like it's from a live show. I'm guessing there's been minimal post-production polish or overdubs added. There's a nice resonance at the bottom-end of the sound, and an overall raw immediacy to the way each song feels and sounds. And package-wise, this release comes with the exact same booklet that accompanies the DVD (although, obviously, not as big, plus with cropped photos).

As I stated in my review of the DVD, this recording captures both Slash and Kennedy on a high - each of them has never sounded better, evidently thriving as they were within a back-to-basics show within the Roxy's 500 capacity confines. You want to see them in action too? Ensure you grab the DVD. Happy just to hear it? This double CD does the job just fine. A ridiculously devoted fan of either/both men? Then I'm sure you'll want to own both.
